Bhaje Children’s Village had a distinguished visitor this month. Dr. Yashwant Chavare,

Chief Magistrate, Pune visited Bhaje on Sunday, 23rd Sept 07.

Dr Chavare remarked, “I saw the accommodation and standard of living of the children at Bhaje Balgram.  I can say with confidence that the children will become responsible persons of our country.  I wish them to be guides who can teach others how to behave. The special efforts of the staff will certainly bring good results.”

Teachers’s Day

On the 5th of this month we celebrated the Teacher's Day across the country. The day is dedicated to the great teacher, the 2nd President of our country, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. He wished that "Teachers should be the best minds in the country." Teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for the nation by shaping the children.

At all SAMPARC centres and projects, we celebrated the Teacher's Day with all its fervour and enthusiasm.

Rahul, a breadwinner….

 Rahul at work

Before joining SAMPARC, Rahul, n 18 year old school dropout, never imagined that he would become a bread winner for his poor family in  Raigad District! Loosing interest in study, Rahul Harshvardhan Patil left the school, in VIII Std but at SAMPARC VTC he excelled well!! Before even completing the full training, a Bhosari based industry selected Rahul through campus selection and thus he became a support to his family!!!

Rahul is just one of the over 1600 students most of whom are already employed! Now he wants to bring his brothers also for training to SAMPARC VTC!!

Community Education Support

Having privileged to contribute to the society by imparting basic education to many deprived children in the poor remote villages of Maharashtra, Gujarat & West Bengal, SAMPARC continues to extend its support to such children through  Community Education Support Programme.

We also have a plan to initiate another educational support programme in Orissa State also near Cuttak.

We intend to improve the standard of living of the children and their families so that they will be equipped to face the challenges posed in the changing social, economical & political conditions.

Day of the Month (Contd…from Oage-1, Col.2)

16th October 2007

17th October 2007

The entire world remembered 16th October as the World Food Day and  17th October as the International Day for Eradication of Poverty.  On these days  millions all over the world again stood up and spoke out against poverty and inequality.  Extending solidarity to these noble causes, hundreds of young people from schools, colleges & other fields gathered at Sambhaji Park, JM Road, Deccan, Pune on the above dates to speak out against POVERTY through the medium of painting, slogans, canvases, grafitti, etc.

Day of the Month

2nd October 2007

On the 2nd of this month, the entire nation remembered Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace and the Father of the Nation. "I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and Non-violence are as old as the hills". These are the words of this national hero and great leader but the simplest of man. Gandhiji proved that non-violence is the most effective instrument of social change. His teachings are promoted even today to avoid violence and find peaceful solutions to conflicts.

At all SAMPARC centres, we celebrated the Gandhi Jayanti with all its fervour and enthusiasm.

Decline in AIDS

A recent survey conducted by the National Family and Health Survey concluded that there is a sharp decline in the rate of HIV infection in our country. Following is the extract of the report carried by Times of India :

The number of people infected with the AIDS virus in India continues to nose dive. In July, the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) put the prevalence at 0.36% of the population. On Thursday, the National Family and Health Survey-III, which tested blood samples of 1,00,000 women and men in age group of 15-49 for HIV, put the prevalence rate at 0.28%. This was the second time such a large scale community-based survey to estimate HIV prevalence was carried out in the world. Earlier, only Cambodia had managed such a feat, but the number was obviously much smaller.

Till July 2007, it was estimated that the prevalence of HIV in the general population was 0.9%. After NACO’s announcement in July, India became the third worst affected country with the deadly disease after South Africa (5.5 million) and Nigeria (2.9 million).  NFHS-III has also found that men have higher prevalence rate with 0.36% than women with 0.22%. For both men and women, the prevalence was highest in the 30-34 year age group.

Cities recorded a 40% more HIV prevalence than rural areas. In Tamil Nadu, the prevalence rate is higher among women, while across the country it is higher among men than women. The infection rates varied from 1.13% in Manipur, 0.97% in Andhra, 0.34% in TN, and 0.07% in UP.

Awareness of AIDS was also found to be high — 61% of women and 84% of men of 15-49 years had heard of AIDS. At least 7 out of 10 men know each of the ABC prevention methods — abstinence, being faithful and condoms — as compared to only 4 in 10 women.

DAY OF THE MONTH

14th November 2007

On 14th of this month, the entire nation celebrated Children’s Day. This day is so much significant for all of us, because it is the birth day of our great leader & first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Children are loved by one and all because of their innocent nature. But, Nehru was immensely fond of them. The story goes that Nehru started to wear a rose on his jacket after a child pinned one on it. On the Children’s Day children all over the country are pampered with goodies. In schools cultural programmes & competitions like quiz, fancy dress, elocution, etc. are organized on this day.

At all SAMPARC centres, we celebrated the Children’s Day and the children participated with a lot of enthusiasm. At Bhaje Children’s Village, the Village Sarpanch, Mrs. Archana Takle & members of Grampanchayat attended the function and held Gramsabha with the children. During this occasion, children from the surrounding villages made petitions to the Village Sarpanch for various needs. They requested for facilities such as playground, village library, speed brakers near schools, regular cleaning of drainage, proper lighting on village roads, regular power supply, etc.

Competitions were also organised in Chess & Rangoli during the occasion.

DIWALI FESTIVAL

On 9th of this month we celebrated Diwali. Although India is the land of festivals, Diwali is one of the few grandest Indian festivals celebrated all over India with equal enthusiasm and zeal. It commemorates the returning of Rama and Sita to their kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.

Diwali is a colourful festival and
people from all age groups express their joy by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating houses, bursting fire crackers and inviting friends & relatives for a sumptuous feast. The lighting is to pay respect to the God for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge and mental peace.

Diwali pooja is the most important part of the festival. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth visits every house during Diwali and brings peace and prosperity to all.

At all SAMPARC centres, we celebrated Diwali with all its fervor.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Here’s another milestone in the achievement of the women empowerment wing of SAMPARC!

In addition to the Housing Project, Entrepreneurship Development & Primary School project, there are consumer stores for  grocery, bakery & vegetables.

This month, a Flour Mill has started functioning in the premises of SAMPARC Abhinav Housing Society near Malavli at the initiative of one of the Self Help Group members. This flour mill, operative since 13th of this month, will be beneficial to the families in the society and the surrounding population.

Determined to help the society in a big way, the Women Empowerment arm of SAMPARC now plans to open new avenues and do a lot more activities in the coming days.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

Vocational Training Centre

VTC Building

Having changed the lives of many deprived children and rural community people, particularly women, SAMPARC continues its mission through various development programmes. The Vocational Training Centre, functioning from Malavli (near Railway Station) is an excellent example for this.

Computer Section

At the village level more than 60% children drop out from schools after 4th standard. They have no other option but to either take up petty jobs or help their farmer parents due to financial crisis. Without any scope for further education, their future becomes miserable. In order to help such unfortunate children & youth, SAMPARC started the VTC.

Tailoring Section

The centre has now become a place for skill development & social entrepreneurship among youth from nearby 30 villages to fight against poverty, unemployment & social security.

Carpentry Section

Welding & Fabrication Section

Apart from main courses there are short-term courses also.

Beauty Parlour Section

Training is imparted in computer, plumbing, welding, fabrication, carpentry, electrician, armature winding, wireman, tailoring, beauty parlour, jewellery making, soft toy making masonry, etc.

Electrical Section

At present, 138 students are trained in different batches. Out of these, 24 students stay at the hostel. There are separate facilities for boys and girls.

Theory Class Room

Over the last 13 years, 1560 students were trained in various trades and around 900 are already employed with various industries.

AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Vegetable Cultivation

According to a new World Bank report, India became one of the five countries (others U.S., China, Japan & Germany) that share half of world’s production. (Courtesy: Silicon India News, 19th Dec 07).  While we achieved a rapid growth in economy, it is a truth that under 60% of India’s billion plus population continues to be dependent on the agricultural sector. But the agricultural share in national income is shrinking fast and stands at less than 20% now. (Courtesy: Indian Express, 18th Dec 07).

The latest World Development Report 2008 from the World Bank calls for greater investment in agriculture in developing countries. The report acknowledges that in the 21st century, agriculture continues to be a fundamental instrument for sustainable development and poverty reduction. (Courtesy: Centad Trade News, 23rd Oct 07).

In an economically advanced society where agriculture looses its significance, it is encouraging that SAMPARC plays a major role in opening more avenues for agricultural development.

At SAMPARC Bhambarde Centre, we have earmarked a lot of activities towards agricultural development.

CAPART

A project was started with the help of CAPART to change the economy of farmers of Ghutka and Adagaon Barpe villages of Mulshi Taluka.  6 Shallow Wells were dug mainly for storing rain water.  With this, the  farmers are happy now that they can cultivate second crop every year. It also helped those farmers who migrated to cities for lack of water to return to their villages to work in their own land.

Cultivation

A massive cultivation programme is already initiated to cultivate crops like onion & other vegetables in an area of 12 acres.

Onion Cultivation

Horticultural Training

Free horticultural development training programme is conducted by SAMPARC for the farmers of nearby villages on a regular basis. This training includes lessons on scientific methods of agriculture too. Qualified Agricultural Staff are conducting these training programmes.

DAY OF THE MONTH

1st December 2007

On the 1st of this month, the entire world commemorated World AIDS Day. This year, the World AIDS Day focussed on ‘leadership’, the theme set by the World AIDS Campaign under the five-year slogan “Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise”.

Awareness raising activities were conducted by various agencies in India to promote more awareness of HIV/AIDS. But the one that caught attention and even raised the eyebrows of many is the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC)’s announcement to start a school exclusively for
children living with HIV. The NMC set up this School with six rooms, the first of its kind by a civic body in the country. In a unique attempt to root out the stigma attached to the HIV-infected, the school admitted 28 children in a city where single parents of 147 such children decided to stop educating them.  It is disheartening to learn that such exclusive arrangements are still needed for HIV affected children, when we think that
India had reached certain level of awareness as far as HIV is concerned. Even with air and water-borne infectious diseases like TB and Leprosy, we find that exclusive clinics and hospices create social isolation. While commending the noble attempt of NMC, it leaves a clear-cut notion that we still lag behind in areas of prevention, care, stigma and discrimination.

At all SAMPARC centres, we conduct various workshops and awareness programmes to spread awareness of AIDS among our children.

CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

Christmas is celebrated to commemorates the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. The day falls on 25th December and it is celebrated all over the world. Christmas celebrations include various traditions such as arrival of Santa Claus, display of nativity scenes, Christmas trees and exchange of gifts and cards.

At all SAMPARC centres, we celebrated Christmas with all its fervor.

GLOBAL WARMING

The recently concluded Bali Summit on UN Climate Change could not take concrete steps to curb global warming. Although it failed to quantify the emission cuts needed to reduce the impact of global warming, some steps were taken in terms of meeting long, medium and short-term challenges. Starting with the long-term objective of cutting emissions in consonance with the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (FAR-IPCC), the Bali talks failed to agree on specific targets because the US was against them. At the same time, the US was forced to drop its demand that emission targets for developing countries should be part of the road map, as also its opposition to developing countries’ demand for technological and financial help.

The FAR-IPCC emphasized that greenhouse gases (GHGs) should peak by 2015 and that emission cuts by 2020 of 25-40 per cent by rich countries are needed to prevent the possibility of a 4 degree centigrade rise in global temperatures.

On curbing deforestation, which is a medium-term objective, progress was made at Bali. Deforestation accounts for about a fifth of GHG emissions, hence commitments on reducing emissions from deforestation will be beneficial. However, adequate funding is required for the scheme to work. .  (Courtesy: Indian Express, 19th Dec 07)

As one of the warmest years (2007) is just passing, as responsible citizens, we must be alert. People from all levels must be told to do whatever is possible to curb pollution in all its forms and protect the environment. At the same time, more tree plantation must be undertaken, eco-friendly buildings must be developed and most important is to completely stop or at least limit deforestation. Also all reckless dissipation of limited natural resources must be restricted and substitute clean & renewable sources of energy.

Contribution of SAMPARC

At SAMPARC, we are glad that we contribute to a certain extent towards preventing pollution and strengthening our environment. Every year we undertake plantation of thousands of trees at all our centres. We try to save the precious energy through wind mills & solar panels. We have also started a Bio-gas Plant at our SAMPARC Abhinav Housing Society with collaboration of Rotary Club, Lonavla. We also work hand in hand with the Agricultural Dept, Maharashtra, to give awareness in forestry regeneration.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

Bhambarde Project

School & Hostel

School Building

Education in rural India is a matter of great concern even today. Although Government strives to impart compulsory education to all children below 12 years, thousands of such children are still deprived of even elementary education. To fill this gap,  way back in 1998, SAMPARC started a School & Hostel in  the remote terrain village of Bhambarde in Pune District, at a distance of 70 km from Pune & 130 km from Mumbai. The sole purpose behind this difficult task was to educate the poor tribal children in Mulshi Taluka up to Std. X. In the initial stages, it was very difficult to convince and persuade the illiterate farmers to send their wards to school. In this hilly terrain where the importance of education plays least significance, SAMPARC is proud that children regularly attend classes for the last 9 years. Today there are 226 students study in the school.

Class in Progress

In the last school year we have constructed two hostels (separate for boys & girls) to accommodate the residential students. 134  village students live and study here.

This school is first of its kind in  Mulshi Taluka. The school provides a good platform for various extracurricular and cultural activities. The school bagged many District & Taluka level awards & medals for special performance in sports. Coaching in sports is provided to many enthusiastic youngsters in a 2-acre wide specially prepared sports ground.

Another feather on the school’s  cap is the recognition of the State Government as the “Best School in Mulshi Taluka of the year 2005”.

The school has well-furnished classrooms, laboratory, library and computer room.

Science Laboratory

Like any other schools in the city, this school also is equipped with Headmaster, trained teachers, office staff, hostel in-charge, helpers, visiting doctor & other staff.

Besides the hostels, there is a spacious kitchen, dining hall & toilets are available in the premises.

A Bird Eye’s View of Project

One of the most significant factors that differentiate this school and hostel from other such institutions in and around Pune is that it provides a very serene, congenial & pollution-free atmosphere for the stay and study of children.

Other Activities

As allied activities, the Bhambarde centre extends educational support to another 100 girl children through Community Outreach (Nanhi Kali) programme.

Check Dam

In the entire complex covered in a vast 16-Acre land, there are separate facilities for a 2-Acre Sports Ground, Wind Mills &  Check Dam.

Cattle Shed

As allied activities, we already have undertaken Agricultural, Vermi-compost & Animal Husbandry activities. Water is readily available within the premises from the dam and well.
